| | | | Creator: | Johnson, Ella Mae Cheeks | | | | Dates: | 1948-2010 | | | | Abstract: | Ella Mae Cheeks Johnson was born in Dallas, Texas, in 1904. Orphaned at age four, she was raised by the Davis family. She attended Dallas Colored High School and Fisk University before applying to the School of Applied Social Sciences at Western Reserve University. Johnson graduated in 1928 with a master's degree in social work. As a social worker, Johnson was first employed by Associated Charities of Cleveland, Ohio. Later, she worked for the Cuyahoga County Department of Welfare in conjunction with the federal program Aid to Dependent Children. She retired in 1961. Johnson married Elmer Cheeks in 1929. They had two sons. Cheeks died in 1941, and Johnson married Raymond Johnson in 1957. He died in 1983. Mrs. Johnson was an active member of Mt. Zion Congregational Church, an avid reader and traveler, and a supporter of a variety of charities. At age 105, she attended the inauguration of President Barack Obama in Washington, D.C. Soon after, with the assistance of a freelance writer, she wrote her autobiography. It was published shortly after her death in 2010. | | | | Creator: | Krausz, Laszlo and Susan | | | | Dates: | 1903-2008 | | | | Abstract: | Laszlo Krausz (1903-1979) and Susan Krausz (1914-2008) were a Jewish couple from Cleveland Heights, Ohio, who were accomplished musicians. Laszlo Krausz was born in Pecs, Hungary in 1903. From an early age he studied violin, travelling to Budapest, Vienna, and Paris to continue his education, until settling in Switzerland in 1929 to study viola. Susan Strauss Krausz was born in Stuttgart, Germany in 1914. She completed piano studies at the Musikhochschule of Stuttgart and then moved to Switzerland in 1933. Following their 1935 marriage, Laszlo and Susan performed a series of viola-piano sonatas for Radio Geneva before immigrating to the United States in 1947. The Krausz family initially settled in New York where Laszlo accepted a position at the New York College of Music and played with the Carnegie Hall Pops Orchestra. Laszlo was then offered a position with the Cleveland Orchestra under George Szell and moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in the fall of 1947. While a member of the Cleveland Orchestra, Laszlo also founded the Cleveland Chamber Orchestra and conducted both the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra and the Akron Symphony Orchestra. He also pursued the sketching and painting that would become his full-time passion following his retirement from the orchestra in 1969. Laszlo's art was shown at various galleries, including the Butler Museum of Art. Susan Krausz joined the faculty of the Cleveland Music School Settlement upon her arrival in the city, and was awarded her M.A. in music from Western Reserve University in 1956. She continued to perform and compose while also teaching piano at Case Western Reserve University and in her home. The Krauszs had two sons, Peter, who owned a public relations firm in Israel until his death in 1989, and Michael, who is currently a philosophy professor at Bryn Mawr College. | | | | Creator: | University Circle, Incorporated | | | | Dates: | 1952-1979 | | | | Abstract: | University Circle, Incorporated was created in 1957 as the University Circle Development Foundation to oversee and coordinate development of the University Circle area of Cleveland, Ohio. Becoming University Circle, Incorporated in 1970, it operated under a 20-year master development plan to preserve the physical environment and reinforce the commitment of members to the area. UCI, Inc. serves as a "land bank" for its members, purchasing, leasing and maintaining properties, and reselling land to members to further their development and promote common purposes. UCI, Inc. also acts as a land use and development consultant, initiating and overseeing construction and assisting environmental and historic preservation projects. It maintains parking facilities, a bus service, and a private security service for the area. It has also entered into urban revitalization projects and cultural, educational, and medical programs in order to strengthen and stimulate relationships with the surrounding communities, particularly the Hough and Fairfax areas. Neil J. Carothers served as UCI's first president, followed by Joseph Pigott, Oliver Brooks, Murray Davidson, and others. He was the son of Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver, who preceded and served with him at The Temple. Prior to his years at The Temple, Daniel Jeremy Silver was rabbi at Congregation Beth Torah of Chicago Heights, Illinois. He became senior Rabbi of The Temple in 1963, serving until his death. He was active in local Cleveland Jewish and secular affairs, particularly with Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Jewish Community Federation's Public Welfare Committee. He was also active in the Central Conference of American Rabbis, the National Foundation for Jewish Culture, and the Zionist Organization of America. Silver was the author of four books and many popular and scholarly articles, and also edited books and journals. The Federation of the Jewish Charities of Cleveland changed its name to the Jewish Welfare Federation of Cleveland in 1926, and in 1930, added a fundraising arm, the Jewish Welfare Fund of Cleveland. In 1951 the Jewish Welfare Federation merged with the Jewish Community Council to become the Jewish Community Federation.
